What is climbing coaching?

Climbing coaching is the teaching of all the 'positive' aspects of climbing; the postitive aspects are what get you to the top of the route or boulder problem that you've set your sights on.

Climbing coaching includes the teaching of good technique, but it is far more than that: it incorporates the world of tactics: in other words, how to plan your climbing so that you make the very best of what you already have.

Climbing coaching covers the psychological aspects of climbing - self-belief is incredibly important, and a confident approach on a climb is a far greater asset than the latest in climbing gear!

Lastly, climbing coaching gives us a fresh perspective on what our strengths and weaknesses are, and will allow individuals to follow structured training plans to work on physical and psychological improvement areas.

About me

Adrian Berry Portrain by Duncan SkeltonMy name is Adrian Berry, and I am a professional climbing coach. Over the last five years I have coached over two hundred individuals both in the UK and at locations around the world. I also provide training services to the military, and have written two books on how to improve your rock climbing.

I have been climbing for over twenty years, much of that full-time. I have competed internationally as a member of the British Competition Climbing Team, and sport climbed up to F8b+, and 8a onsight. In the trad climbing game, I have added many hard new routes in South Wales and the Peak District, many of which I had to develop specific training regimes in order to succeed.

What I offer

Trad coaching - photo by Nick Smith Trad climbing coaching in the Peak District

These popular sessions are principally run on Peak Gritstone, and look at everything from slab and crack climbing technique to the finer points of gear placement. The day will typically start with some bouldering, then move onto routes, increasing in difficulty until weaknesses are reveled, and can then be worked on. Typically by the end of the day I would expect you to be demonstrating improvements by climbing routes a grade harder than you've climbed before. More.

I am available for indoor climbing coaching at The Castle in London, The Arch in London, Climbing Works in Sheffield, and at other walls by prior arrangement. More.

L for learner Learning the basics of trad climbing on rock

If you have a reasonable amount of experience in sport climbing, and have swotted up on the theory, I offer a 'fast track' two-day course to get you leading trad confidently. If gear is needed, I can advise on what to purchase, or for an extra £25 per day, my extensive collection of gear will be at your disposal. More.

What climbing coaching isn't!

Climbing coaching does not focus on the safety aspects of climbing. These are the incredibly important 'negative' aspects of climbing - concerning how 'not' to hurt yourself or others in what is a potentially dangerous activity. Only climbers who are confident in taking responsibility for their own safety in their chosen area of climbing are ready to receive coaching.
